Etymologically uncertain. Leslau (LS 154) connects it to Soqotri mezingua ‘a sack’ (ibid.) and Mhr. mezēgu ‘ein Sack aus Palmblättern’ (Hirsch 1897:46), whose origin is uncertain to us.
