This verb likely belongs together with ṣibéte ‘in a good, straight manner’, ṣeb (yeṣében/ľiṣáb) ‘to do something in a straight way’ (CSOL III) and éṣṭeb (yeṣṭében/ľiṣṭáb) ‘to be, become straight, pain, even’. The underlying root is *ṣwb and the original meaning of the present verb (causative-reflexive stem) must be something like ‘to foresee, to anticipate something right, good, pleasant for oneself’. For a broader Semitic perspective of *ṣwb cf. Arb. ṣwb ‘to appear in a place where he/it should remain’, (II) ‘to declare to be right, to approve’, (IV) ‘to go right, to reach its goaľ, (X) ‘to consider to be right’, perhaps also JBA ṣwb ‘to frequent, to visit’, Syr. ṣwb ‘congregatus est; advenit, visitavit’. One wonders whether PWS *wṣb/*nṣb ‘to stand, to be erect; to be firm, stable’ may be further related as variant roots.
