etymology

The underlying first radical is *γ (Morris 2021:84), which precludes a comparison to PS *ˁbr ‘to pass, to cross’ (HALOT 778) hinted at in LS 295. Conversely, we find plausible a derivation from proto-MSA *γbr ‘to meet’ (also mentioned by Leslau), represented by Mhr. γebōr ‘to meet’, Jib. γɔ̄r ‘to meet’ and Soq. ˁö́bor (Western γ-, Morris 2021:1767). The semantic correlation finds an exact parallel in Hebrew ḳōrā ‘beam’ (BDB 900) < PCS *ḳry ‘to meet’.
