etymology

With Kogan 2015:493–494, the Soqotri term is directly comparable to Jib. γɔ̄r ‘welľ, perhaps also Arb. γabar- ‘a small water in a place where it collects and stagnates’. This is fully confirmed by the Western Soqotri form with γ- recorded in Morris 2021:191. Certainly unrelated to either PS *biˀr- ‘welľ (contra Rhodokanakis 1915:19–20 and scores of subsequent studies) or Arb. γawr- ‘bottom, lowest part of anything; low or depressed ground’ (contra Bittner 1913d:6).
