etymology

In all probability, from PWS *ˁgl ‘to be quick, to hasten’, even if no direct semantic parallels in the respective languages are attested. Note that Mhr. hāgōl ‘to make someone hurry’ and Jib. oˁógel ‘to hurry’ are more likely to be Arabisms than autochthonous representatives of this root. Similarity to Gez. ˁagala ‘to give birth to, to hatch’ is likely due to chance coincidence.
