While undoubtedly going back to PS *ˀab-, the i-vocalism of the base and -f instead of *-b remain hard to explain (but cf. Bulakh 2023:205). Note that the former feature clearly goes back to proto-MSA, cf. Mhr. ḥayb (< *ḥa-ˀīb), Jib. ˀiy.
