etymology

Not unlike Mhr. ketḥáwl ‘to apply kohľ and Jib. kḥal ‘to apply kohľ, borrowed from Arb. kḥl ‘to anoint the eyes with kuḥl’. Comparable terms are attested almost throughout Semitic (CDG 279), their ultimate origin is unknown.
