a. áˁmɛyk ˁeʸh rího ‘I covered it with water.’ (Naumkin et al. 2015a 24)
b. maḷ ˁáˀki aˁádoʰ ekέbes rího díˀki hóri ḥeréˀki ḷenzέfo aḷ-šénzef héyki wa-rího áˁme ˁéyki wa-sabáḥki di-bɛr ‘While we were at sea, water started to enter the canoe. We tried to bail it out but it wasn’t possible for us to bail it out. The water overcame us, and we swam ashore’ (CSOL II 3:8)
‘He/she (animate) covered somebody/something (ḷe-) with something (direct object)’: a.
The basic stem verb ˁími is used about a substance covering another substance. The animate causer is introduced either by the intensive stem ˁámi or the causative stem áˁme. The suggested distribution is not always strictly observed (cf. example b where the causative stem is used about water covering a wrecked ship).
