etymology

Etymologically uncertain. If related to ḳáŝor ‘cliff, rock in the sea’, cf. further Mhr. ḳəŝōr ‘rock on the shore sometimes covered by the sea’. Given the fact that ḳáŝre specifically designates a scratchy surface, derivation from PWS *ḳŝr ‘to peel’ is not to be ruled out.
