In view of the inflectional forms with intervocalic -n- attested in the Vienna corpus, Leslau (LS 277) may be right to derive this term from PS *nŝˀ ‘to lift, to carry’. Verbal lexemes with the root m-ŝ-y and the meaning ‘to pulľ would then be denominative (cf. LS 252). For a remarkable structural parallel cf. Akk. maššû ‘a basket or other container used for carrying’ (CAD M/1 390).
