Direct parallels in the continental MSA are Mhr. šīt (pl. šetōten) ‘backside, buttocks; anus; root’ and Jib. s̃ét (pl. s̃téte) ‘privates (front or back, of a male or female)’. With SED I No. 255, these terms must be related to Hbr. šēt (pl. šātōt) ‘buttocks; base, foundation’, Syr. ˀeštā (pl. ˀeštātā) ‘podex, nates; fundus’, Mnd. šata ‘buttocks, pubic regions’ and Arb. ˀist- ‘podex, anus’. Taken together, these terms are probably reducible to PWS *šit- ‘pudenda’, with various semantic ramifications in individual languages. Further parallels adduced in SED I No. 255 are rather unreliable and must be taken with caution.
