etymology
With Jahn 1902:199, Proto-MSA *ḫūr-, *ḫarr-Vn- ‘a little’ is to be compared to Arb. ḫwr ‘to be weak, feeble’. Leslau (LS 192) furhter compares Gez. ḫewwur ‘weak, invalid’, Tgr. ḥawärä ‘perdre la parole (de faiblesse)’. Bittner’s equation (1915:40–41) with Arb. ḥwr ‘to decrease, to be defective or deficient’ is, conversely, hardly acceptable for phonological reasons. Hbr. ḥwr ‘to diminish’, if reliable (Hapax in Is 24:6), can go back to either *ḫrr or *ḥrr. On this root see further Kogan 2015:559.
