etymology

The verb is undoubtedly related to Mhr. hedmōs ‘to dip (bread)’, Jib. edũs ‘to put one’s hand into food’, edmís ‘to dip (bread in gravy)’, suggesting the original meaning ‘to plunge, to dip, to insert’ (CSOL II 9:7).

Further etymological considerations see in Naumkin et al. 2016b:66 and SEDonline.
