With Leslau (LS 307), a variant root with -g and a perfect semantic matching may be seen in Gez. ˁayg ‘lake, pond, pool, marsh’, Tgr. ˁayg ‘pond, swamp’, Tna. ˁeyag ‘stagnant water in a pond rendered turbid by livestock coming to drink from it; pool of water, pond’. At the same time, a direct formal parallel is Arb. ˁayqat- ‘shore, side of the sea’, rather different semantically. In terms of meaning, the Arabic word comes close to Sab. ḥyḳ ‘port’, Gez. ḥayḳ ‘shore, seashore, riverbank’, Mhr. ḥayḳ ‘shore, beach’, Jib. ḥāṣ̃ ‘sea-shore’. Note, finally, Sab. ˁwḳ, tentatively translated as ‘bank, embankment’.
