Leslau (LS 50) translates this verb as ‘regarder’. Although this meaning is not actually attested in the Vienna corpus, we do find there the derived substantive égde ‘sight, look’, also known to our language consultants and attested in CSOL III. It is reasonable to surmise, therefore, that ‘to stare, to peer’ is indeed the basic meaning of the verb, from which ‘to hit the mark’ (normal in the speech of our informants) could emerge via ‘to have in one’s sights, to aim’. If this suggestion is correct, cf. Arb. wǯd ‘to find’, also derivable from the original meaning ‘to face something/somebody, to see something/somebody face to face’ (cf. Spanish encontrar).
