etymology

Borrowed, with a euphemistic shift of meaning, from Arb. smr ‘to hold a conversation by night’. The Arabisms in continental MSA preserve the original meaning without sexual connotations: Mhr. semūr ‘to talk late’, Jib. sõr ‘to chat at night’.
