etymology

From proto-MSA *ŝVgVr-at- ‘ravine’. Cf. perhaps Gez. ŝagara ‘to take a step, to amble, to go across’ and its EthS cognates (CDG 526), especially Amh. täšaggärä ‘to cross a river, to cross over’.
