With Leslau (LS 109), to be compared to Arb. ǯals- ‘rugged ground; elevated area’. A further interesting parallel is found in Tgr. gelsa ‘abyss, ravine’. Johnstone (ML 119) unconvincingly compares Mhr. gelōs ‘to quarreľ, Jib. gɔ́lɔ́s ‘to quarreľ.
